Yemen: Al-Qaeda, pirates and build-up of naval forces in the Gulf of Aden (Free) Print Article

Posted on: Sat, Nov 22, 2008

Reports from Sanaa suggest that the dangers in the Gulf of Aden and along the Red Sea coast are set to increase because of the build-up of foreign navies in the area to fight the pirates along the Somali coast and the Horn of Africa.

According to these reports, the countries that are sending their vessels to the area, notably the European countries, Russia and India, do not take the Yemeni warnings into account.

The Yemenis believe the Al-Qaeda linked extremist groups that are active between Somalia, Yemen, Bab Al-Mandab and the Gulf of Aden are working on plans to involve the foreign navies, notably the European navies, into permanent clashes with the pirates.

If they succeed, they will turn the region of Horn of Africa into another battleground similar to Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Sources close to the Yemeni Interior Ministry say that Yemen has already proposed to set up an effective cooperation between Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Oman and the US Navy to fight piracy without carrying out naval parades, for fear such parades may catch the eyes of Al-Qaeda linked groups.

Note that representatives of six Arab countries, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Sudan, Jordan and Somalia, attended an exceptional meeting on 20/11/08 in Cairo.
The meeting was intended to forge a common strategy to fight piracy in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea.
