UAE: MBZ challenges U.S. vetonote

The UN General Assembly (GA) overwhelmingly backed an Emirati-introduced resolution which recommends that the Security Council (SC) reconsiders Palestine’s application for full membership in the UN.

The resolution followed the U.S. delegation’s veto against a SC resolution, submitted by Algeria in April 2024.

Emirati President Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan (MBZ) is said to have expressed dissatisfaction with the alliance between U.S. President Joe Biden and pro-Israel U.S. lobbies regarding the Palestinian issue and the situation in Gaza.

The note provides a comprehensive overview of the following aspects:

- MBZ’s plan to challenge U.S. actions that disregard Palestinian rights

- His views on participating in U.S.-led initiatives concerning Gaza

- His condition to enter agreements with the U.S. administration concerning Gaza

The note also highlights MBZ’s decision to strengthen his international relations regarding Palestine.
