UAE: Sheikh Tahnoon, Sullivan discuss Abu Dhabi’s withdrawal from Combined Maritime Forcesnote

U.S. media reported, citing U.S. officials, that the UAE was disappointed in the U.S. failure to deter Iran's activity in Gulf waters after the latter seized two international oil tankers in April and May. The media reports added that Abu Dhabi had demanded Washington to take stronger action against Tehran.

The UAE denied in a statement that these media reports were accurate, and announced last Wednesday (31/5/2023) its withdrawal from the U.S.-led Combined Maritime Forces (CMF).

Emirati Minister of State and Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Khalifa Shaheen Al-Marar visited Tehran on the same day (31/5/2023).

Al-Marar met the Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and discussed bilateral relations between the UAE and Iran and ways to expand cooperation to achieve shared interests.

Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi and UAE National Security Advisor Sheikh Tahnoon Bin Zayed met last Friday (2/6/2023) with his U.S. counterpart Jake Sullivan during an official visit to Washington.

Sheikh Tahnoon and Sullivan discussed the aforementioned developments, among other topics of mutual concern.

Tactical Report has prepared a report (387 words) to highlight this matter, including:

- Al-Marar's discussions with Abdollahian

- Sheikh Tahnoon's discussions with Sullivan

- UAE’s condition to rejoin the CMF

- UAE’s view on Iran’s role in the Gulf region security

- UAE's suggestion to mediate between the U.S. and Iran

The report also mentions what Sheikh Tahnoon and Sullivan discussed about the U.S. role in supporting the 2020 normalization of ties between the UAE and Israel.
