Iran’s expected retaliation for bombing its Damascus embassynote

An Israeli airstrike on 1/4/2024 destroyed the consular section of Iran's embassy in Damascus killing at least seven officials, including Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a top commander in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and senior commander Mohammad Hadi Rahimi.

Two hours after the attack, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) convened and decided to retaliate against Israel.

The following note highlights Iran’s expected retaliation, including:

- The nature of the military response (directly from Iran or indirectly from proxies?)

- The potential Israeli targets

- The possibility of attacking Israeli embassies?

The note also highlights Iran’s likely reaction against the U.S. if the latter is proven to be involved in the attack and the message that Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian sent to Washington in this regard.
